From the Simple Minds music video Alive and Kickin’ to the battle scenes in War of the Worlds, Greene County has been a visual background for filming almost since celluloid was invented. With rivers, mountains and landscapes worthy of a record-breaking price paid for a painting by an American artist, Greene County provides an amazing visual backdrop to complement a variety of film productions.
Film production crews are increasingly finding their way to Greene County, with 23 recorded film credits overall and 16 productions since 2010. These include television episodes of Say Yes to the Dress and American Pickers, feature films such as Cold Comes the Night and Meskada, as well as commercials, music videos and scenic footage. When the new Upstate New York tourism website NewYorkUpstate.com recently launched, the website cover picture was in Greene County.
Greene County small businesses offer a wealth of support services for visiting film productions. Film crews require a wide variety of goods and services, including catering, room and hall rentals, local talent agencies, photographers and makeup artists. Businesses that cover last minute, unanticipated on-the-road needs are also available here, such as home improvement centers, restaurants, hair stylists and even animal hospitals. Filming has been taking place here since the end of the 19th century, with footage of Kaaterskill Falls in Haines Falls released from Edison Studio in 1897. Some of the notable films located at least in part in Greene County have been Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005) filmed in part in Athens, Mary Stuart Masterson’s award-winning The Cake Eaters (2007), filmed in the village of Catskill. The most recently movie was crime thriller Cold Comes the Night, filmed in Windham, East Durham and Cairo in 2012 and released in 2014 in the United States.
